The Puppet Master's Apprentice

An Interactive Weight Painting Laboratory

Lab Overview

Meet Woody, a wooden puppet who dreams of moving like a real person! But there's a problem: his strings (bone weights) are all tangled up, making him move in the most ridiculous ways. Through this interactive lab, students will become Puppet Masters, learning the ancient art of weight painting to bring Woody to life!

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how vertex weights control mesh deformation
  • Experience the relationship between bones and vertices
  • Master weight normalization concepts
  • Learn professional weight painting techniques
  • Build intuition for natural character movement

The Tale of the Tangled Puppet

In a dusty workshop at the edge of BlackBox village, there sits a peculiar puppet named Woody. Created by a master craftsman who forgot to attach his strings properly, Woody has a unique problem:

The townspeople laugh, but Woody dreams of dancing gracefully. Can you become the Puppet Master who finally gives Woody the gift of natural movement?

Lab Activities

Activity 1: "The Wiggle Disaster"

Experiencing Broken Weights

Setup: Interactive 3D scene with Woody the puppet

Student Mission:

Woody's Reactions:
  • "My nose! Why is my nose moving when I wave?!"
  • "I just wanted to take a step, not do the splits!"
  • *Sad puppet noises when he can't move properly*

Activity 2: "The String Detective"

Understanding Weight Relationships

Interactive Tools:

Experiments:

  1. The String Test: Trace which vertices connect to which bones
  2. The Pull Test: See how weight values affect movement distance
  3. The Color Map: Visualize weights as heat maps
// Students use these investigation tools: showWeightStrings(selectedBone); // Visualize connections measureWeightInfluence(vertex); // See exact values highlightProblemAreas(); // Find broken weights

Discovery Moments:

Activity 3: "Puppet Surgery"

Learning Weight Painting Basics

The Weight Painting Toolkit:

Paint Brushes:

  • Add Brush: "String Strengthener" - Makes connections stronger
  • Subtract Brush: "String Cutter" - Weakens connections
  • Smooth Brush: "String Smoother" - Blends between areas
  • Replace Brush: "String Replacer" - Complete reassignment

Guided Exercises:

Exercise 1: "Fix the Waving Hand"

Problem: Nose moves when arm waves

Solution Steps:

  1. Select nose vertices
  2. Remove arm bone influence (Subtract brush)
  3. Add head bone influence (Add brush)
  4. Test the wave!

Exercise 2: "The Bending Elbow"

Problem: Elbow bends like a metal pipe

Solution Steps:

  1. Paint gradient from upper arm to forearm
  2. Use smooth brush at joint
  3. Test different weight distributions
  4. Find the "sweet spot"
Woody's Feedback:
  • "That feels better already!"
  • "My elbow bends like a real boy's!"
  • *Happy puppet dance when fixed correctly*

Activity 4: "The Normalization Spell"

Understanding Weight Math

The Magic Rule: All strings must add up to 100% pull!

Vertex #42 (Elbow):
- Upper Arm Bone: 70% ✓
- Lower Arm Bone: 30% ✓
- Total: 100% Perfect!

Vertex #43 (Broken):
- Upper Arm Bone: 80%
- Lower Arm Bone: 60%
- Total: 140% Too much!

The Normalization Game:

Woody's Physics Lessons:
  • "If strings pull more than 100%, I'll rip apart!"
  • "If less than 100%, I'll be too floppy!"
  • "Just right makes me move naturally!"

The Grand Finale

The Puppet Festival: Once Woody is fixed, he joins a grand puppet show where:

Woody's Graduation Speech:
"Thanks to you, I'm no longer a tangled mess of strings! I can wave without wiggling my nose, walk without wobbling, and dance like I always dreamed. You're not just a student anymore - you're a true Puppet Master!"
"The art of weight painting is like conducting an orchestra of strings. Each vertex is a note, each weight is the volume, and when they all play together in harmony, the puppet dances!"
